  1. Congrats to Tony Fang, Azfar Qureshi, and all of our amazing nephrology fellows at St. Michael’s Hospital on their great Canadian Journal of Kidney Health and Disease paper, published in November 2025. This collaborative work, with Drs. Ann Young and Alireza Zahirieh, was home grown and funded by a SMH AFP grant – it profiled how a simple 2 hour workshop could train nephrology fellows how to use POCUS to assess kidney size and rule out hydronephrosis.

  2. Congrats to Xiaolin and the rest of the Yuen lab for their recent Science Translational Medicine paper, published in June 2025 on the role of podocyte YAP/TAZ hyper activation in driving crescentic glomerular diseases!

  3. Congrats to Darren and Dr. Eno Hysi, who won the Keenan Award for Medical Discovery in this year’s Angel’s Den for their ScarScan software that can convert normal ultrasound into an accurate measure of kidney fibrosis! We hope to launch a new start-up company around this technology in 2025! This work was just published in Nature Medicine. They were recently profiled in the Globe and Mail, and also on Global News (along with some other great Unity Health researchers).

  4. Congrats to Darren and Dr. Eno Hysi, who were awarded a Critical Technologies Initiative Stream 1 grant to fund the development of fibrosis image analysis software!

  5. Congrats to Darren and Dr. Eno Hysi, who were accepted into the 2023 UTEST (University of Toronto Early Stage Technology) incubator program! UTEST will help Darren and Eno take their recent fibrosis imaging discovery to market! Their goal is ultimately to provide a new method to easily, safely, and accurately measure organ fibrosis. More exciting news to come soon!

  6. Welcome to Dr. Aditya Mandapati (joining as a postdoc fellow), Shukai Huang (joining as a research assistant and data analyst), and Kendrix Kek (joining as a clinical research coordinator and data analyst)!

  7. Congrats to Eno Hysi, who has just started a Staff Scientist position at St. Michael’s Hospital, and will be shortly coming on faculty as an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto! He is opening his own lab focused on novel imaging solutions.
